Is DTG Printing Cost-Effective for Small Orders?

DTG printing can be a practical choice for a small apparel order when the artwork and garment are a good match. It avoids creating a separate screen for each ink color, but the complete price still depends on the shirts, print size, locations, preparation and quantity. For a business or organization, the useful comparison is a quote for the actual order—not a promise that one method is always cheapest.

When DTG can make sense for a small order

Direct-to-garment printing applies a design directly to suitable fabric. It can be useful for detailed, full-color artwork on appropriate garments, including cotton styles. Ask TACA to review the selected shirt, color and artwork before choosing a process.

A small staff group, volunteer team or event committee may need a limited run without simplifying a multicolor design. That is a useful situation to explore DTG. It does not establish a universal quantity cutoff or guarantee a particular price.

What affects the total price?

Garment choice and sizes

Brand, style, fabric, color and size mix affect the garment portion of the quote. Provide the sizes your group needs and confirm availability. A listed style is not a reservation of supplier stock.

Print dimensions and locations

A small chest design is a different job from a large front graphic plus a back print. State the finished dimensions and every location so quotes cover the same scope.

Artwork preparation and production

Artwork cleanup, garment preparation, application and finishing all take work. DTG does not require screen setup, but that does not mean every order has no preparation cost. Ask what is included instead of assuming a particular setup policy.

Quantity

Per-shirt pricing can change with quantity and the production plan. Do not assume that printing one shirt and printing fifty must have the same unit cost. Request a comparison at quantities your group can actually use, and consider total spending as well as unit price.

Compare methods using the same specification

Keep garment, color, size mix, artwork dimensions and print locations equivalent when comparing methods. Review the desired print feel, fabric compatibility, detail and care requirements alongside price.

Compare DTG and DTF printing for context, then ask which option suits your project. A general method guide cannot replace a review of the actual garment and design.

A practical group-order example

Imagine a local organization ordering shirts for 18 volunteers. The coordinator could ask for a quote for 18 matching shirts with one full-color front design, then compare an optional larger run if extra shirts have a clear purpose. Keep the garment and artwork unchanged between estimates.

If the order exceeds the budget, compare another suitable blank or remove an optional second print location. Buying unused shirts only to reach a lower unit price may increase the total spend. These quantities are planning examples, not TACA minimums or price tiers.

Prepare a useful quote request

  • Who the apparel is for and how it will be used.
  • Preferred garment, shirt colors and size breakdown.
  • The best original artwork file available.
  • Finished print dimensions and front, back or sleeve locations.
  • Estimated quantity and required wearing date.
  • Pickup or shipping preference.

Before approval, confirm the artwork version, proof, garment availability, total scope and order-specific schedule. A digital proof helps with layout; ask about a physical sample if fabric feel or production behavior needs checking.

Questions about small DTG orders

Is DTG always cheaper than DTF?

No. Garment, design coverage, quantity and production requirements affect the comparison. Ask for an equivalent project quote.

Does full-color artwork automatically cost more for every added color?

DTG does not need a separate screen for each color, but artwork coverage and production requirements can still influence cost. Confirm pricing for your actual design.

Can we order more later?

Keep the original reference and approved specification. Ask for a reorder review because availability, quantity, preparation and pricing may change.
